PDC & Zebra Technologies Form Product Partner Agreement

Precision Dynamics Corporation (PDC), a global leader in automated identification solutions, and Zebra Technologies, a world leader in on-demand printing solutions, have launched a new wristband printer/programmer that combines radio frequency identification (RFID) with print-on-demand direct thermal or thermal transfer printing. Zebra's new R402 printer will print human readable or bar code data while simultaneously reading, writing, and verifying data to PDC's RFID wristband.

Injuries to patients resulting from drug therapy errors and the costs to the healthcare system that are associated to them are one of the most common types of adverse events that occur in hospitals. Healthcare statistics show that the costs to treat patients that have been injured as a result of such errors totals $177.4 billion per year. The combined technologies of PDC's Smart Band, Zebra's R402 printer, and specialized software components help to reduce these errors, which are often caused by misidentification.PDC's Smart CompuBand® is a print-on-demand wristband that contains an RFID inlet, which allows information to be written and retrieved by RFID scanners. Ideal for healthcare facilities, the Smart Band system provides wireless communication for safe and accurate patient ID, tracking, and processing. Smart Band can be read and written through and around the human body, and through bed coverings and clothing.
"This advanced system combines the traditional benefits of bar code technology with the advanced non-contact, non-line-of sight interface of RFID," states Irwin Thall, Manager of Healthcare Market Development for PDC's Advanced Marketing and Technology Group. "We're confident that it will open up many possible applications, including positive patient identification, guest/visitor registration, point of sale and security access. The new collaboration will benefit users by making it easier to issue a credential that will become a personal dynamic database."
